Community Engagement

We believe every one of us can make a difference, and together we’re stronger in ending ‘honour’-based abuse (HBA) and harmful practices. Let’s be the change we want to see and create a world free from HBA and harmful practices.

A small group of women sit together in a community room during a Savera UK session. Two women facing the front are smiling and engaged in conversation, while others sit with their backs to the camera, including one woman wearing a black and white patterned headscarf. An orange Savera UK banner stands in the background with information about violence, abuse, and harmful practices. The setting looks relaxed and welcoming.

Community Voices Hub

Is an inclusive space where community members meet to connect and engage in meaningful conversations to help drive positive change.

The Hub offers wellness sessions, skill sharing, creative engagement, guest speakers and regular meet-ups. The group aims to create a safe environment where every voice is heard.

The Community Advocate Programme

It is made up of volunteers who are trained on a range of topics, including HBA and harmful practices, safeguarding, how to help when someone may be at risk, and the importance of community engagement.

The aim for the Community Advocate is to work with Savera UK to promote and support community engagement and participation, and help signpost those experiencing or at risk of HBA and harmful practices.

A person sits at a table holding a printed quiz sheet that asks, “How many women in the UK are estimated to have survived female genital mutilation (FGM)?” with multiple-choice answers. Several people sit around the table with takeaway coffee cups, colourful letter cards, and activity materials visible. The scene appears to be part of a community event or workshop.

What community engagement means to us:

Community engagement can mean different things to different people. At Savera UK, it’s a two-way dialogue; sharing experiences, learning from one another and providing a safe space to discuss issues that affect individuals, families and wider communities. It’s also about:

  • Raising awareness of ‘honour’-based abuse (HBA) & harmful practices: Inform communities about the indicators, risks and impacts, and challenge prevailing attitudes and stereotypes
  • Safeguarding those at risk: Everyone has a responsibility to keep others safe. Savera UK equips community members to recognise HBA warning signs, offer appropriate support and signpost individuals to our specialist services
  • Championing community action: Bring together community voices to deliver local initiatives that drive behaviour change and work to end HBA & harmful practices

We’d love to hear your ideas for getting involved. Whether that’s a new event, workshop or project. You can email us at [email protected]
