Community Engagement

Community members – particularly those in positions of power – can have a significant influence on the lives of individuals and families. This power can be used to make positive change.

Community members – particularly those in positions of power – can have a significant influence on the lives of individuals and families. This power can be used to make positive change.

However, such power and influence can cause harm if those in such positions believe in ‘honour’ and permit/practice ‘honour’-based abuse (HBA) and other harmful practices.

Therefore, it is vital to engage communities and key leaders that stand against HBA and harmful practices such as forced marriage, female genital mutilation, virginity testing, breast ironing or not being accepted by family/community due to not sharing the same beliefs

Savera UK believes working together is the best way forward to end HBA and harmful practices. This includes our community partnerships, particularly those that strengthen our connections within communities where these practices are more prevalent.

Our work can include:

  • Raising awareness – ensuring that those at risk can seek the help they need, and that communities understand the risk and impact for those affected
  • Engagement – engaging with communities and encouraging them to join our campaign to end these practices, through establishing community advocates, delivering community sessions, opening dialogue and working together in partnership
  • Event Attendance – attending external health, wellbeing, university, and other community events to raise awareness of HBA and harmful practices and how to access help and advice
