Savera UK coordinate & sponsor International Women's Day event
By Afrah Qassim
Savera UK and LCDS were the main coordinators of the annual International Women’s Day event and were also sponsored by MSB Solicitors and RASA. The event was further supported by many other agencies including WHISC, Women Reach Women, Toxteth Women’s Group, Refugee Women Connect and also Liverpool Adult Learning who provided free activities for the women and children and Amani Services - a special thanks to Ibby who decorated the venue so beautifully.
As always, the aim is to celebrate our annual achievements as extraordinary women and explore the theme #BalanceforBetter. The event was held on the 28th March and we welcomed over 150 women from different backgrounds and cultures. Women had the opportunity to participate in activities and discussion as well as being informed of information they can access. This is our 9th year in running this particular event with a focus on providing and meeting the needs of the BME women as well as wider communities.
Our guest speakers this year were Cllr Ann O’Byrne (who hosted the event), Cllr Anna Rothery, Wendy Eves (MSB Solicitors), Saba Ahmed (L8 Better Place) and our own Board Member Ngunan Adamu (BBC Radio presenter and founder of iWomen). They talked about equalities and opportunities that can be for women and also talked about speaking out on what we believe in in order to make a change and be role models to the next generation. We also had a number of performances including Savera UK Youth volunteers Ayo and Juliana with their mentor Kiara who read their own poems, Ariana and the fantastic drumming by Batala Mersey and our amazing DJ Faiza who has been with us since the beginning. This event would have not been possible without our amazing and committed partners and partnership.
