Raising Awareness and Responding to Female Genital Mutilation
The 6th February is an international day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, a day to raise awareness and to work toward its elimination.
Savera UK – a Merseyside based charity working to save those at risk from horrific incidents of honour-based violence, female genital mutilation and forced marriage. Since Savera was set up in 2010, the charity has been dedicated to tackling domestic abuse within black and minority ethnic communities, and raising awareness among professionals and practitioners of these harmful practices. Savera UK has made an outstanding contribution to protecting some of the most vulnerable and marginalised individuals in our local communities.
Savera UK and Merseyside Harmful Practices Strategy group with the support of Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner’s to hold a half day seminar to raise awareness and respond to Female Genital Mutilation and work toward its elimination.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) encompasses all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitals for non-medical. It’s a practice that is deep-rooted to those who practice it. The practice also violates their rights to health security and physical integrity, their right to free from torture and their right to life when the procedure result in death. This an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls and against their human right.
The seminar will take place on Monday 6th February 2017 9.30-1pm at Merseyside Police Headquarter, Canning Place, Liverpool, Merseyside, L1 8JX
The Seminar’s aim:
- To raise awareness of Female Genital Mutilation
- The Home Office (FGM Unit) will talk about the work they are currently doing
- Opportunities to discuss services response to Female Genital Mutilation across Merseyside
- Opportunity to address challenges of cases of Female Genital Mutilation
- Addressing the importance of multi-agency practice and the support available
