I am a survivor of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and I want to use my experience as a survivor of FGM to tackle FGM and other harmful traditional practices.
From the age of 14, my biggest goal in life has always been to become a free and independent woman.
Some people ask me if I was a survivor of domestic abuse or harmful practices. My answer is no, I consider myself lucky, because I could have easily been forced into marriage at the age of 11years old.
Many students had never heard of female genital mutilation or honour killings, and so this gave us an opportunity to effectively showcase everything we had learned and inform the students of the issues at hand.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is any procedure involving partial or total removal of the external female genitals or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
“Education is key” - it’s something that Savera UK’s patron Nazir Afzal OBE said at our Memorial Day Conference for those who were killed as a result of Honour Based Abuse last July.
